I had been considering having a tummy tuck for a while, but was hesitant about the procedure and had many questions. When I went for a consultation, the minute I walked in to Dr. Hsu's office I knew I had made the right decision. The staff was very friendly and helpful at all times and just as Dr. Hsu ALWAYS greeted me with a smile. Once I met... More

An Overview of the Otoplasty Procedure

    Last updated 1 month ago

Otoplasty, also known as ear pinning, is a unique kind of surgical procedure because it can be performed on children as young as the age of 6. Unlike other features of the face, the ears develop fully early in life. For children with protruding ears, school and playtime can be difficult as other children make note of the issue. Adults may also be candidates for the otoplasty procedure with favorable results.

    What Happens During Surgery
    Otoplasty
is an outpatient procedure that can be performed under local or general anesthesia depending on the preference of the patient. When the patient is at a younger age, general anesthesia may help the child feel more relaxed about surgery because he or she will be completely asleep. Typically, the surgical incisions can be made at the back of the ear, but in cases where incisions are needed on the front of the ear the doctor will disguise them in the natural folds of the cartilage. Some tissue may be removed to reshape the ear, and the new structure will be held in place by permanent internal sutures. The incision is closed using stitches, creating an immediate improvement in the placement of the ears.

    Recovering from Otoplasty
For young patients, it is recommended that the surgery be performed during school breaks when adequate recovery time is available. Full recovery may take 1-2 weeks, and the process is relatively pain-free. Some minor soreness and inflammation may be seen, but this can be easily controlled with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications. You may also experience itchiness under the bandaging of the ear. It is important to keep the bandaging intact if this occurs, as the stitches may be disturbed when the bandaging is taken off at home.

Tips for Choosing the Right Plastic Surgeon

    Last updated 1 month ago

When you are considering getting plastic surgery, deciding on the right surgeon is as important as the procedures themselves. In the hands of a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon, you will be able to feel safe and comfortable while addressing your unique needs as a patient. Here are some guidelines to help you sort through the vast pool of plastic surgeons in the field today:

    • Research potential surgeons
You can find cosmetic surgeons in your area with a simple online search. For the best list of qualified surgeons, do your search with the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This will ensure that your doctor is board certified in the specific branch of surgery that you are seeking. Once you have found a few doctors that you are interested in, look into their educations and backgrounds for a complete picture of their experience.
    • Read patient testimonials
If you have friends or family members who have had plastic surgery, ask for suggestions from them based on their results. Otherwise, you can rely on former patient testimonials and before/after pictures to judge the quality of a surgeon’s work. Look for patient stories from individuals who have had the specific procedures that you want, as different doctors have varying specializations.
    • Choose a doctor you feel comfortable with
You want to find a surgeon who not only has experience and qualifications, but one you can feel comfortable talking to about your surgical questions and medical history. Open communication is integral to pleasing results from your procedures, so interview your doctor before committing to surgery to see if you feel comfortable.
